Asian food
By Cahaya Asia -
Are you preparing for a series of city-hopping all over Asia? Asian food is so diverse and full of flavour plus it's relatively easy to prepare so you can assure yourself that you will have a great time tasting Vietnamese, Cantonese, Japanese, Thai and even Indian food.
We have compiled some tips for you on how to ensure that you will have a fun and filling time while exploring the cuisine in Asia.
1. Don’t Snub Street food
Asia is big on street food. The rule of thumb is that anything on skewers is great. From the grilled chicken liver to something a little more conservative such as grilled meat in peanut sauce (Malaysian Satay) or caramelized fruits, skewers are tasty, exciting and cheap options for you to give it a try. Don’t be scared to ask what a particular skewer type is and more importantly, don't be afraid to try them.As food is part of the cultural experience, why not take photos that demonstrate how the food is prepared and with permission take photo's that demonstrate how locals go about eating their favourite delicacies.
2. Take Some Cooking Classes
A great way to experience the food in a certain region is to enroll in cooking classes. They don’t have to be really intensive ones, sometimes a 1-day tutorial on how to make authentic pho broth is good enough and will give you something to show off when you return home.
3. Practice Your Close Up Photography
The perfect way to preserve your memories during your food expedition is to record it via stunning photographs and videos. Capture yourself trying exotic cuisine or figuring out how to eat dishes such as Xiao Long Bao. For taking close up photos, make sure that you have a lens that is capable of macro setting or for those using point and shoot cameras, put it on macro mode (usually symbolized by a tulip).
As mentioned previously be sure to take photos of the people preparing the food, too. Preparation of street food is always a great subject, as well as those open kitchens in restaurants with flaming woks and roasted ducks being dried in the air.
4. Read Traveller's Reviews
To get an idea where you can eat or try the best of anything, check out reputable travel sites like TripAdvisor for the restaurant travel reviews. Just make sure that you take what you read with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, you can definitely get a good starting point on places to eat that are close to your accommodation or in the same vicinity of the hottest tourist spots in town.
On forums feel free to ask for advice on where you can try the best spring rolls, Hainanese chicken or even the best ramen. Ask where the locals love to eat and try these places. Be ready to try smaller restaurants that are family owned – there are a lot of small restaurants around Asia that have been running for several decades.
5. Don't Forget The Drinks!
When you are exploring food don't forget to explore the drinks too. From the different tea varieties, iced cold milk teas with coffee jelly, quirky smoothies and traditional beers, wines and liqueurs (providing you are of legal drinking age).
