Singapore map

By Cahaya Asia -

Cosmopolitan and polished, Singapore is one of Southeast Asia's most glamorous capitals, functioning as a high-traffic travel hub and a shoppers' paradise. This clean and orderly city state is only small, and Changi Airportis easily reached from hotels in Singapore city center by rail or road in around 30 minutes.

Orchard Road is Singapore's most renowned area – this is where mall after mega-mall conjoin to form one of the world's most comprehensive suppliers of retail therapy. Linked by a rabbit warren of air-conditioned walkways and underpasses, shoppers can traverse almost the entire length of Orchard Road's main shopping area without having to feel the city's sub-tropical heat.

Aside from shopping, Singapore has a thriving arts scene. The Esplanade complex on the harbor stages opera, live music shows and concerts, and is part of a vast entertainment zone with restaurants, bars, an amphitheater and art galleries. It's here on the marina front that the city's iconic Merlion sits, looking out over sparkling water, yachts and the new developments of Marina South City Park.

Visitors to Singapore are spoilt for choice in terms of dining and entertainment. Clarke Quay is one of the most recently renovated entertainment areas and is just as popular with tourists as it is with locals. Little India offers a more bohemian atmosphere, with cool cafes interspersed amongst budget eateries, English-style pubs, and affordable guesthouse accommodation – all nestled in rustic pre-war townhouses. Bugis Junction is also a noteworthy area, its freshly renovated cobblestone streets, markets, mall and brightly painted buildings a huge drawcard for hip young locals.

At the other end of the spectrum lay the iconic Raffles Hotel, the Mandarin Oriental and the Ritz Carlton, where shoppers can retreat for high tea or a Pimms. After dark, visitors can head to Singapore's clubs which are dotted all over the city, to the 24/7 Geylan or for something completely different, to the Night Safari – a zoo tour that features exotic nocturnal animals in natural habitats.

Across the harbor, a short drive from Singapore city center lays Sentosa Island – a leisure resort built on reclaimed land with designer tropical beaches, a golf course, and several resorts.
