Amphawa, interesting floating market popular with the locals
Amphawa is a village in Western Thailand, close to Samut Songkhram. It is known for its lively floating market. Most visitors come to Amphawa on a day-trip from Bangkok. First you have to get to Samut Songkhram — you can take the fast van from Victory Monument. The trip takes about 1,5 hours.
Ayutthaya, ancient capital showcasing its many ruins
Ayutthaya, full name Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, is an ancient capital and modern city in the Central Plains of Thailand, 85 km north of Bangkok. Convenient minibus service operates from the Victory Monument square in Bangkok. The cost is usually ~70 baht, takes around 1 hour or 1 hour 20 min.
Bang Pa-In, its magnificent Summer Palace makes for a pleasant day trip
Bang Pa-In is in Ayutthaya Province, 60 km north of Bangkok. Air-con 2nd class buses depart from stall 99 of Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Moh Chit) every 30 minutes or so and cost 43 baht (Nov 2007), no advance ticket needed.
Damnoen Saduak, picture-perfect floating market on tourist steroids
Damnoen Saduak is a village west of Bangkok, a popular day-trip from Bangkok for its floating market. This popular attraction is some 80km west of Bangkok, accessible by regular bus from the Southern Bus Terminal. Everyday, hundreds of vendor boats crowd the market area in the early morning till noon.
Hua Hin, beach resort town popular with Thais and Scandinavians
Hua Hin is a seaside resort city in Thailand. It is popular with Thais, having become quite fashionable as a weekend getaway spot for Bangkok residents, as well with foreigners and as an ex-pat retirement or vacation home location. Buses to Hua Hin leave from the Sai Tai Mai terminal about every 20 minutes and take around 3.5 hours. The price (1st class) is under 200 baht. Buses go from 4.00PM – 10.20PM.
Kanchanaburi, the famous Bridge over the River Kwai and some good national parks
Kanchanaburi is a city located at the confluence of the rivers Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai. More foreign visitors are discovering why Thais know it as one of the most beautiful provinces in the country with its easily accessible waterfalls and national parks. You can catch a taxi to Kanchanaburi, return to Bangkok for the day for around 2000 baht. This should include stopping at the Bridge over River Kwai and museum, Kanchanaburi township, the local dam and the cemetary for the prisoners of war.
Ko Kret, rustic little pottery island to the north of Bangkok, a pleasant day trip out of the concrete jungle
Ko Kret (also Koh Kred) is an island in the Chao Phraya River, 20 km north of Bangkok, Thailand. The easiest way to reach Ko Kret is to take the once-weekly Chao Phraya Express Ko Kret tour, which leaves the Central Pier (BTS Saphan Taksin) every Sunday at 09:00 and visits a number of attractions before returning at 15:30. The cost of the cruise and guided tour is 300 baht (no lunch).
Nakhon Pathom, Thailand's oldest city and site of the world's largest stupa
Nakhon Pathom is in Bangkok Metropolitan Area in Thailand and the site of the world's tallest stupa. Public buses leave from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal. The trip costs 40 baht in first class and takes about an hour in good traffic. Buses go every 10 minutes from 4:10AM until 9:30PM.
Samut Prakan, mostly visited for the Ancient City open air museum
Samut Prakan is a city in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, Thailand. You can use the old Sukhumvit Road and also Highway Number 303 to get there. The distance is only 29 kilometres to Samut Prakan town.
